When I started blogging, several years ago, it was more of a journaling thing. Imagine my surprise when I started to get a comment...or two. And then a dozen comments became pretty normal, and every once in a while I broke 20 comments. I was never a big-time blogger, but I was big enough for me. I felt that the random stuff I typed was being read, and either enjoyed or disagreed with. And that was fun.
Then many of the bloggers who commented/whose blogs I read stopped blogging. Some migrated completely to Facebook (which I have still not joined). Then I was laid off from my job and didn't post for several months. Upon my return, I shouldn't have been surprised to see that commenters had all but disappeared completely.
I am thankful that there are still a few who visit and comment regularly, like Jess, Liz, Liz and Overthinking Mama.
Maybe a few more will come back some day...or newly arrive.
Anywho...Today I'd like to talk about how I just don't belong in a salon.
Many years ago, I got my haircut wherever I got the best deal, then a friend introduced me to the salon. After my initial shock "$25 for a haircut?!?" (circa 2000), I fell right into it. After my son was born, I switched to another salon that offered Saturday appointments. After my son started getting his haircut at a "place" rather than at home, I switched to a cheaper chain place to offset the cost.
Hubby and my son gave me a gift certificate to a fancy-schmancy spa/salon for Christmas. Hubby tried to get a friend of ours to get one for his wife, too, so we could go together, but the friend's husband said his wife was "Not really a spa person." "Neither is my wife!", conceded hubby. But bless his heart, he got me the certificate anyway. I finally used it this weekend, just for a haircut, because I needed one anyway.
I appreciated the gift and the sentiment, but this spa was kind of snooty. I waited over a half hour past my appointment time, the stylist drenched the collar of my shirt when she washed my hair. To make matters worse, I felt that she was making a dig at my Mackinac Island souvenir shirt when she said "I'm sorry I got your t-shirt wet." Perhaps a fancier shirt would have stayed drier. While all salons try to sell their products, I felt very much like I was stuck in a commercial when she identified the shampoo, conditioner and serum as she used it. Then at the end said "Would you like to purchase any of the products we used today?"
I like the haircut, but she shifted my part about 3/4" to the side, so each morning when I first comb my hair I have very long strands hanging over on one side until I fix it.
I never felt so much like I didn't belong somewhere before. I knew I didn't belong when the haircut came to $45. Dude, $20 haircuts are plenty for me. Even $15. I used the remainder of the certificate for a green bottle of OPI nail polish for my toes. Because I'm a little more funky than I am spa.
But thank you, hubby and son, for a sweet gift. :-) The best part - The gift certificate was a deal - They got double value for what they paid for it! Yippee!

I can't believe she shifted your part and cut accordingly without asking! Every stylist knows that if they cut off the wrong part the hair will basically be ruined. Mine ALWAYS checks with me if I always part my hair where it's currently parted, do I mind shifting it, etc. That is a sign of a snooty, thoughtless stylist to me for sure.
awe! thanks for mentioning me! :-)
I cant see spending a ton of money on a hair cut... I had my hair cut at a chain place back in march.. it was the first time id been somewhere in at least a year to get my hair cut.. it cost me $20! i thought that was a lot... but it was nice to be pampered a lil bit! lol. Normally I cut and color my hair myself... (i kinda like that lopsided, multi-layered, look!) lol. plus its kinda cool when someone really likes my hair and asks where I got it done at.. I can proudly say.. I did it myself! :-)
God Bless

I'm not a hoity-toity salon kind of person, either. It's not so much that they make me uncomfortable, more that I resent paying so much for what is essentially the same service I could get somewhere else for much less. Or, for the last couple of years, at home.
I've noticed since I had my long blogging hiatus, my comments have pretty much dwindled away, also. Oh, well...
I don't consider myself a "spa" kinda girl, but have recently been paying a lot for my hair. I love getting a good deal as much as the next person, but I gladly pay the $40 it costs to get my hair cut because I know that I don't ever have to worry about what I will be left with when she's done. My hair has a mind of it's own and Cassie, my hairdresser, knows how to make it look good. It's taken me a long time to find her, but when I did the price I had to pay was worth it.
Jess - I know! The $12 places always ask "Is this where you part your hair?" before cutting. I figured she must just KNOW, being the pricier hairdresser and all...
OM - I won't cut my own hair, but I will cut my own bangs. I know, daring! Ha.
Liz - I have been mostly happy with the less expensive places. Hubby has more issues with haircuts than I do, so now he does his own, and goes to a place about every 3 haircuts so they can straighten out anything he doesn't get quite right.
Michelle - Hello!!! Long time no see. If you're happy with your haircut, then I'm glad it works for you. Personally, the $45 lady didn't impress me anymore than my last ($12) haircut. :-)
I like the woman who does my hair at Bubbles.
But she always makes me feel guilty for not keeping up with my roots.
I agree on not spending a lot for a haircut. I've been seeing the same stylist for 24 years and she only charges $15 for a dry cut and does precisely what I ask her. My friend who came over yesterday had green toenail polish on - it was really cute!
I always used to go to a "Barber" until I started a rock band and then I had my first "stylist" treatment. It was cool, but I couldn't really see where the extra $10 had gone. After that I went back to barbers and was happy.
Now I go to a "stylist" and thankfully he does a great job, doesn't try to sell me products and most of the time I feel at home. Especially as another stylist in there is super punky and down to earth.
When she wet your t-shirt you should have said "Oh, don't worry about it, I was just afraid they would drip on your cheap-ass shoes".
I can't even fathom paying that much!! Where I take my son it ends up being only $25 total for both with a tip! LOL!
