Is this thing on?

I know at least two people might still read this, so I'll take a chance and post.

Tomorrow is my 5 YEAR blogiversary! 5 years! Half a decade! Wow.

Starting next week, I am going to be a 24 hour a week employee. This after 3 months of anything varying from 0 hours per week to 12 hours per week. Surely it will be a transition, but I've had a great time of unemployment, so I certainly can't complain. Plus, I still get some extra time off.

It's National TV turnoff week. According to the statistics, children watch an average of 20 hours of TV per week. Really? What children? Yours? Certainly not mine. My son watches a half hour in the morning and a half hour in the afternoon. That's 7 hours per week. Tack on 45 minutes on the Wii each day, and we're up to about 12 hours. 20 hours is a long time.

At school, they are getting small prizes for each day they participate in TV turnoff and bring in the parent signed slip saying they didn't watch the previous day. The teacher said in past years, parents have signed off when children did watch, and that this sends a negative message. You think? I can't believe parents would do that. The sad part is, how do you think she found out in the first place? Of course the kids told her. Sad when the children have to tell the truth for their parents.

Anyway, ours has been off since Sunday night. We're having fun playing board games, playing outside, etc. Sunday night we're having a couple families of friends in his class over to have a little celebration of the end of TV turnoff. With no TV, of course. :-)

I am definitely still reading, and glad you're still posting! Sounds like things are going well! Good luck with the transition. 24 hours a week sounds like a good amount of time so you can bring in a decent paycheck and still be able to enjoy some extra quality time with your son the way you have been over the past few months.

I didn't know it was TV Turnoff Week, but we're playing along. MM lost screen time Monday, and yesterday was the 2nd Grade Musical so no time to watch.

I'll let him know we're being challenged to do it, and he'll definitely want to join in.

Yes, more than 2! Happy Blogoversary!

My sons have learned the hard way every year that if they want the prizes they earn for participating in TV turnoff, then they actually have to turn off the TV...we won't sign their slips otherwise. Because we're the meanest parents in the world (evil cackle).

Jess - Really, 24 hours is about perfect. But I am technically a full time employee, so apparently I should be open to more, like 40, blah, blah...

Liz - I'm sure he'll be thrilled to find out he can't watch any TV today. Ha.

OM - It would have been awkward if no one commented. Out of sight out of mind, they say. Heh.

CDP - I don't think my son would consider asking us to sign it if he didn't fulfill his end. What are these people thinking? I couldn't decide if they wanted their child to get the prize that badly, or wanted to seem like the type of parents who encouraged their child to follow through.

I'm still here and glad to admit I'm rather glad that you'll be consistently working 24 hours each week. Maybe now you will get more of a chance to post:) I've missed you!

If I wasn't my sole source of income, I think I would love a 24-hour work week. :)

Sounds like a nice balance!
