A couple of weeks ago at the gas station, I was given a coupon that said "We have changed the formula of our iced coffee and we want you to be one of the first to try it." Not to be one to insult the automatic coupon machine at the gas station, I decided to redeem it this morning on the way to work before it expired on Monday.
When I arrived at the gas station, the only available parking spot was blocked by a lady who had her door open wide. I waited patiently. When she closed the door, she mouthed "I'm sorry" and I smiled at her.
I went in and got my iced coffee, and came back out. I did not notice that the same woman was still in her car next next to mine, until she said something to me out the window. I didn't hear her, and said "Excuse me?" She then said what I believed to be "You have a pretty car. I like the color." I thanked her, and she immediately drove away. Had she intentionally waited for me to come out so she could say that?
Pretty is not an adjective normally used for a car, and considering that I was driving our older car this morning, a rather non-descript (albeit reliable) 1997 tan Camry, it hardly seemed worth waiting to compliment. As I drove away, I thought how hubby would get a kick out of our car that would have been traded in this past winter, had my job not cut my hours by 20%, getting such a compliment.
Then I started to question...Did she actually say car? My hair is a shade of auburn that is rather unique, as far as natural hair colors. I remember my mom saying that when I was a young child, old ladies used to stop her to say what a pretty color it was. As a teenager, I was constantly compared to Molly Ringwald, even though it was nowhere near the same shade as hers, and I looked nothing like her otherwise. It was just that no one else had red hair back then (besides Pippi Longstocking and Annie, that is).
So...My hair may actually be pretty. I like the color. The style is usually pretty much non-exisitent, but the color is my favorite thing about it, and it's very thick.
It actually seems a little more likely that she was complimenting my hair than the color tan on our car, but still a little surprising that she would wait for me to compliment either.
Or maybe she was complimenting something else altogether...Either way...Thanks.

Either way, it was a nice compliment. :) I've always loved auburn hair and recently our little Landon's hair has been turning a light shade of auburn. Most people don't notice it until he is outside and then they all comment about how they never knew he had such red hair.
I'm going to go ahead and say she was complimenting your hair. Not that I have anything against 1997 tan Camrys. But, you know.
I'm guessing hair. Picture, please.
Michelle - My son has light brown hair that shows red highlights in the sun.
Jess - Maybe she's a fan of tan...and older.
Liz - Heh. Hubby only recently got to the point where he's not worried about use of real names on internet. Pictures will take a few more years, I'm sure. :-)
We demand photos of the pretty hair, if only so we can try to replicate it on our own heads. :)
