The title sounds like a short description of a Bugs Bunny sketch. I only wish.
A 90 year old woman lives next door to us with her daughter, who I can only assume is in her mid sixties. The daughter likes to wear a bikini to sun herself in the yard and to do yard work (even in the front yard).
I'm going to do a quick segue to talk about our garden. Hubby put a lot of effort into our garden this year. He even went so far as to build a little frame and attach a mesh fence to it to keep the dog out of the garden, as well as the rabbit who always seems to be in our yard, in spite of the fact that we have a beagle (a 15 year old beagle who has diminshed hearing and sight, and possibly even smell, since he doesn't get worked up about the bunnies anymore).
Hubby spotted the rabbit, who our son has affectionately named "Bushy" in the garden various times. Hubby would go out there and approach the garden, thus startling the rabbit, who would leave the garden. After the rabbit chewed a couple holes the mesh fence and dined on our corn plants one too many times, hubby bought some chicken wire and built a stronger garden fence.
So, our newly reinforced garden is successfully keeping the rabbit out.
Yesterday Bushy made the mistake of moving on under our 6 foot wood privacy fence to the immaculate yard and garden of our elderly neighbor and her bikini clad daughter.
Yesterday evening we (hubby and I, but not our son, thankfully) looked through the window and spotted the neighbor in the backyard, in her bikini, with a BB gun, taking aim at the bunny in their garden. She started off halfway across the yard and gradually got closer, and closer. She ended up at a point where we could no longer see the bunny, but she appeared to be shooting from very close range.
We live in the suburbs. Our gardens are small. Our yards are small. Our houses are close. I am really bothered by this woman's reaction to a bunny. I'm bothered by seeing someone wandering through a yard next to mine with a gun that's not of the squirting water variety. Yes, they eat plants. In spite of that, we enjoy seeing them in our yard and around the neighborhood. We decided to take other steps to protect our plants.
Before you say they can't do such things because they're elderly, the 90 year old one is out shoveling snow at 5AM when it snows. They're both surprisingly able, and there is a grandson who comes over and does all sorts of projects.
Of course, we caught three mice last week in traps, so maybe I am just the pot calling the kettle black.

I agree with you that shooting bbs in a well-populated area is irresponsible.
Bunny B Gone (putrescent egg solids!) is great at keeping away the vermin.
We had some redneck neighbors across the street from us in my neighborhood when I was growing up. The parents were very sweet, but their teenaged/early 20's sons were, uhm, not so sweet. We regularly heard them shooting their BB guns at cats because they got mad that the cats made their dogs bark.
I really don't understand how people can be so mean to animals.
Well, I'm always a proponent of non-violence, whenever possible.
And, while I get the warm fuzzies like everyone else when Ralphie gets his Red Ryder at the end of the movie, BB guns can do some damage if they hit the wrong spot. I met a kid at church camp once whose eyes blinked uncontrollably all the time, because a wayward BB damaged the nerves in his eye area. He didn't "shoot his eye out"--he could still see fine, but he blinked a LOT. So I share your concern about neighbors in close quarters shooting! Those little pellets can richochet.
I think our next door neighbors trap squirrels to eat. There's just something upsetting about the people next door killing woodland creatures. At least my neighbors don't wear bikinis. Geez!
Oh, I'd be upset if someone here was shooting anything with a BB gun. That's just wrong!

Wow, I thought I was the only person in America that had a neigbor like that, oh wait, my neighbor sunbathes in the NUDE. Yes,she too is in her sixties... But I don't think that she would notice any bunnies in her backyard because there is so much CRAPOLA back there you can't actually see the ground...
I would prefer that the bunny who lives in my backyard find someplace else to live, but I'm definitely not getting out a BB gun to facilitate that! He's not eating any of my plants; I'm just annoyed by the big hole that he dug in my yard. As if that wasn't enough, he decided he needed TWO entrances to his house, so now there are TWO holes for my lawn mower's wheels to get stuck in and for me to warn any friends hanging in my backyard about. I don't wish the bunny any harm, but if he decides he needs a third entrance, I might say all bets are off.
I wouldn't want my neighbor shooting a bb gun, either - she could miss and hit someone. When I was a kid, the mean neighbor boy hit me with a bb (of course, he was aiming at me), and it HURT.
There are so many wild bunnies where I live, especially in my old neighborhood where a neighbor bred rabbits, too successfully, and they spilled over into the neighborhood. So darn cute.
Makes me want to turn that bb gun around on that bikini goof.
people, it's just a bb gun! I really think SO many people have become detached to where our food comes from. When you eat that hamburger guess where it comes from? Oh you like chicken fingers? Guess where they came from. sheesh people. Rabbits can do serious damage to your garden if you let them. Fencing is an option. but as you've learned fencing doesn't stop them always. As long as the eat the rabbit more power to them!
Nature Lover (whatta maroon, ya big fat liar), an improperly shot animal can wander off wounded, develop an infection and die a slow, painful death. Does that sound like a good thing to do? I think the 60-year-old who still wears a bikini deserves to feel the sting of a BB to her backside.
Killing wildlife because it has the *nerve* to wander into your space is arrogant and cruel. They don't understand deeds and property lines and rental agreements and "gardens". To them a fence is just an obstacle between them and the thing they need: FOOD! To them, your vegetable garden is heaven-sent, just what they need to survive. Sure, it's okay to eat them, but heaven forbid they try to get something to eat, they're breaking some kind of imaginary law by invading your private property.
And remember, when you're shooting at that "pest" that keeps wandering through your backyard, you just may be shooting someone's beloved pet that wandered out or got lost or whatever. Imagine some heartbroken child who doesn't understand why "Fluffy" doesn't come home. "Well, Susie, your kindly, elderly, exhibitionist neighbor SHOT HER!."
We can't claim to be evolved and civilized if we use rules of nature to justify our bad behavior. And if you're going to behave that way, admit that we're just another species of ANIMAL.
