Ich bin ein berliner

Happy Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday, everyone. We celebrated by sharing a Paczki this morning. Do you have those where you are? Pronounced Poonch-key. I don't know if they're regional, or what. I don't remember them growing up, but maybe my parents just never told me about them. They are basically a jelly donut with a thicker shell.

I signed on for a multiple sclerosis research study at the end of last year that just involved filling out a questionaire. They recently contacted me for another study. This one involves wearing a pedometer for a week once a month for a year. I have no plans for any activity other than my regular daily activity today. Any guesses as to how many steps that will yield? I put it on at 6:00 this morning, and will probably remove it around 7:30 this evening. I just took a peek at the count, and realized that it has barely moved since I arrived at work half an hour ago...Because I have a desk job!!! Their research will probably determine that I am actually half sloth.

Last night the phone rang. The number on the caller ID was local, but unfamiliar. When I picked up, it was a friendly woman soliciting a donation for the local firefighters. I very politely asked her to be taken off their call list (I don't do donations over the phone). She very politely agreed to remove our number. Five minutes later, she very politely called again, as though we had never spoken. Again I very politely asked to be removed from the call list, and mentioned that I had just spoken with her. She checked her list, and cheerfully observed that I was on the list two times, and removed the number there, too. She's lucky she got cheerful, perky me. Some people might have been rude about being solicited twice in five minutes for a donation, rather than just blogging about it. :-)

Don't forget to enter my giveaway. You know you want to try some Funky Monkey Snacks! :-)

I should get a pedometer; I've always wondered how many steps I take every day. I think that 10,000 is supposed to be the ideal, but I bet I'm far short of that.

Laissez les bon temps rouler!!! (Let the good times role!)

We recently celebrated Mardi Gras with some king cake that my MIL brought while visiting. It was delicious. I've never heard of your dessert before.

Thanks for checking on me. The kids have been home on winter break and we had family in town, so thus the reason for my hiatus.

CDP - I'll be far behind 10,000, too. Hubby guessed 5,000, which I was on track for until I got to work. Now it's looking pretty unlikely. We'll see. It's 10:30 and I'm at 1371. I was at 1000 when I got here 2½ hours ago.

Mandy - Normally I wouldn't, but I thought I remembered the name (which was a company) from a previous solicitation and I wanted to nip it in the bud.

Deb - I like the way you think!

Michelle - I remember my french. :) So we've got german and french on here so far today - Anyone care to add another language? I have never had king cake. Maybe someday. :)

I bought a pedometer last spring because I was curious how many steps I took each day. The first day I had it, I clipped it onto my pocket. I was walking up my front steps when I got home from work and it went flying off my pocket, through the opening in the steps, and way up under my front porch where I could not get to it without getting down on my belly and slithering through tons of pine straw and leaves (and who knows what else). It was not worth doing all of that and I had not looked at it in a few hours so I still have no idea how many steps I walk. I gave up on pedometers after that.

We don't have those doughnut things here. I get grossed out by the texture of jelly anyway, so I'd probably decline, so have one for me! Hasta luego! (that's Spanish, roughly translated "Until next time").

I definitely would have been less perky during the second call. Not rude, but also not cheerful.

SS - My pedometer has come off 4 times today - BUT it has an alligator clip in addition to the belt clip, so it never falls. :)

ETW - I knew that one, too. I took French, Spanish and German in high school.

Mandy - Latin's a new one for me. Hubby should know lots of Latin, as his mom was a Latin teacher, but he didn't retain much of it.

Jess - Normally I wouldn't have been cheerful, either. I guess I was in a good mood, and a little amused by the situation.

Oh, you're so patient. I no longer answer my phone if it's a number I don't know ... unless I'm expecting a call from someone and don't have their number. I figure if it's important enough, they will leave a message. 99% of the time, they don't.

I'd probably be afraid to see how "little" steps I do take in a day.

I have never heard of a Paczki. Why is that pronounced Poonch-key?? I'm perplexed.

I've never heard of a Paczki either. But as long as it doesn't have a plastic baby doll baked into it the way King Cakes do, I would probably eat one (or, you know, three).
