3434

That's how many steps I took yesterday. About a third of the goal that some group has put out there of 10,000 steps per day. I am 1/3 awesome, 2/3 sloth. What do you think, folks? Will the count be higher or lower today?

I did not intend to watch the President's speech last night. I thought it was on at 8:00 at which time I was baking oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. I turned on the TV at 9:15 and it was just starting, so I watched most of it. I will not talk about my thoughts on the stimulus package, nor will I say (much) about the wild applause that ensued when President Obama said that we should spend more time reading to our children (Was that a new idea he came up with? Somehow my parents already knew about this back in the seventies). What I would like to mention is how awkward, uncomfortable and fidgety Nancy Pelosi seemed. This was not her first time up there, as she had been sitting behind George Bush for a few years. Back then she always looked comfortable. Annoyed, but comfortable. Last night she would stop in the middle of applause to fix her hair, she was chewing on her lip, she just seemed very fidgety to me. She was smiling more, however, so good for her.

Flurrious was talking about bulk purchases yesterday. Now I want to talk about bulk purchases. I think it all started with my dad, who always made sure we had ridiculous amounts of toilet paper in the house. Always good toilet paper, too. That may be why to this day, I will not scrimp on paper products. Generic just about anything, except not toilet paper or tissue. I've pretty much always had a membership to Sam's Club, and there are quite a few things we almost always buy there: Toilet paper, paper towels, tissue, chicken, broccoli, shaving cream, deodorant, vitamins, cereal, granola bars... We've been off of our regular monthly schedule of going to Sam's Club this year, so when I found us down to our last package of toilet paper, I panicked. While at the grocery store, I purchased one 4 pack of toilet paper. What the heck? It looked wrong, and lonely. I am used to a 4 pack of 9 roll packages. 36 rolls at a time. What are we supposed to do with 4 rolls of toilet paper? Luckily hubby made it to Sam's club the next week, and we now have plenty of toilet paper again.

Don't forget to try to win some snacks!

We have a Sam's club, but it's about 40 miles away, so I'm not a member. I stock up on stuff when it goes on sale, and like you refuse to buy "cheap" paper products. There's nothing worse than having a cold and using a tissue that feels like sand paper.

Congratulations on your plethora of toilet paper. One would not want to get caught without.

I believe Obama was just reminding us that they still make books. It's the videogame generation, after all. ;)

I use cheap toilet paper. I like Scott's because one roll lasts forever, so I don't have to buy in bulk. (Couldn't if I wanted to, actually...nowhere to put it!)

I had to laugh because I'm the same way. Can't buy anything but Puff's Plus for tissues and I sometimes experiment on toilet tissue for the best (softest and yet durable, lol). But, when I see I'm down to the last unopened package of toilet paper (or paper towels) I panic a little.

Apparently, your dad and mine went to the same school. My parents would just *stockpile* TP and paper towels - and we do the same. At Sam's Club. I think we'll try to get there this weekend.

We are just beginning our foray into the world of bulk purchasing. We signed up for a Costco membership last week. We tried to not be tempted into buying things we wouldn't normally get, and instead purchase things we use anyway that we were sure would keep long enough for us to use them. So yes, paper products, cleaning supplies, etc. Also orange juice, Diet Coke, meat that can be frozen. Not milk.

I get panicky when we get down to on 9-pack of toilet paper. And we only buy the good tissues. Does that make me snotty? heh, get it? snotty...

Michelle - I usually try to make sure my son has some tissue with him at school when he has a runny nose, since school tissue isn't always the softest.

Deb - True indeed.

Liz - Isn't Scott's paper sold by the roll? Do you actually purchase a single roll of toilet paper?

Kathi - I like Northern. Soft, but not too soft (whatever that means :-) ).

ETW - My dad grew up in the 50s, so it's not a great depression thing or anything...I wonder if they ran out of toilet paper once? Or maybe he got it from HIS dad.

Jess - At our Sams Club, milk is sold by the gallon, but sometimes at a better price than the grocery stores. We can easily go through 2 gallons within the date milk stays fresh.

JB - I'm the same way! What on earth do we think is going to happen that makes 9 rolls of toilet paper go away?! Actually, I'm probably more worried that I'm so used to having plenty, I will forget we need it, and suddenly there's NO toilet paper. Never happened, hopefully never will. :)

I live alone so I don't really go through enough toilet paper to justify buying it in bulk, however, I also panic when I get down to only a couple of rolls. I think it goes back to my college days. I lived in a duplex with three other girls. We had two bathrooms. We once got down to one roll of toilet paper for four girls. We had to keep it out in the hallway for a couple of days and share that one roll until we could get to the store. I never want to feel like I'm going to run out again.

Wow! I never realized so many people freaked out at the thought of running out of toilet paper!

I was annoyed by Nancy Pelosi last night as well, though I really did like his speech. I twittered that I had never looked forward to a presidential speech before, but I do now. I just feel like he speaks directly to the people - I didn't even think he was talking to Congress.

The book thing - I know our parents knew it and we know it, but lots and lots of people don't. They think it's ok to have their kids play video games all night and fall asleep watching TV (though I have to admit that mine do that sometimes now - but not when they were younger). So, I'm half a bad parent in my own eyes:)

I'm with you on the TP thing. Buying it in anything but Volkswagon-sized blocks seems wrong.

I'm like you when it comes to TP. No skimping. Only the name brand will do!

I didn't think Nancy Pelosi looked fidgety. She just looked HAPPY to me! I share her sentiment. :-)

Also, I am wondering how long it would take me to go through 36 rolls of toilet paper. There are benefits to living alone, I suppose.

I just bought more toilet paper yesterday. I couldn't help it; it was on sale.

10,000 steps is approximately 8 miles. I don't know how people that work all day can get that amount of walking in. I can easily cuz I'm retired and fit.

SS - One roll to be shared between two bathrooms? The horrors. :)

Shannon - My son usually watches about 15 minutes of TV in the morning, and then a half hour in the evening. That's more than he used to watch, and sometimes I feel like we're letting him watch sooo much...But in reality, I know he has friends who watch HOURS more. One friend (also 4) has had a TV in his room for a year. I cannot imagine putting a TV in the room of a child that young.

Tiff - If I have to buy one of the 4 packs, I feel like I should buy several of them. :)

Lifeintheleftlane - It's funny - I've got no problem with generic food, but I turn my nose up at generic TP.

Stefanie - I bought in bulk when I was single, too. It's more economical sometimes. I commented on the post that Flurrious had that someone I had dated commented on my family size pack of paper towels. "Why do you have the family pack? You don't have a family."

Flurrious - That's a great reason! It's not like it goes bad! :)

Gfb - I feel better about my step count then. Yesterday I was over 3800, which by your calculations is over 3 miles. Not bad for a desk job. :)
